I grew up in Lutsk, Ukraine. My school focused on physics - mathematics - natural science profiles. I got accustomed to scientific thinking, travelled to competitions and camps. My favorite were inventor tournaments where we got to debate physics inventions. My first exposure to technology. I also participated in Geography, German Language, competitions.
Thanks to my school's partnerships I got to travel to Germany on an exchange program. It was my first time traveling outside of my country, love to languages.
I then travelled to Minnesota. I attribute much of my ability to speak English to that time. I made a case for myself to take senior classes. This is where I developed interest in Economics thanks to a really great teacher Mr. Stockard. I also learned to stop apologizing for views and desires thanks to Mrs. Kapsner.
I didn't know much about the world, but I knew it's big and full of opportunities. The US felt like intuitively the best place to be, so I was set to get acceptance in some prestigious university. Prestige = safety, and reflecting back I was intuitively correct. I got accepted into Northwestern and a school in NYC, but ultimately landed my bet on Minerva. Physical places are at the core of human understanding of the world. We wage wars over territories, dream of Columbus voyages and work earnestly to fund vacations to foreign destinations. Regardless of whether it's a gas station in our hometown or the view of ocean seen for the first time, locations imprint in our memories and powerfully mediate our life experience and worldview.
